Service Tech for Stafford Mechanical Contractors

I worked for 25 years with my family’s heating oil company. When we sold it, I took the opportunity to go back to school to learn heating and air conditioning. I knew what I wanted to do in the HVAC industry. I looked at other programs; I chose MTTI because I could complete the program in seven-months, and the tuition was more affordable than at other schools.

Unlike oil, the heating and air conditioning industry will keep me busy year round. Right now I am working primarily in residential preventive maintenance. At Stafford Mechanical Contractors, I will eventually have the opportunity to work in commercial settings, and in geothermal and radiant floor heating.

MTTI introduced me to gas heat, air conditioning and refrigeration—I knew little about any of this when I entered in the program.

The shop is well-stocked with equipment; the instructors are knowledgeable—they’ve been in the field for years.
I was in a great class, with people of mixed ages. Four or five were mature individuals; a number were in their late twenties and four or so were right out of High School. By the end, we were like family.

There is a shortage of good HVAC techs—I see lots of jobs advertised on indeed.com and Craig’s List.

And there are the companies that come to MTTI, eager to hire you and get you to work. Older HVAC and Refrigeration employees, who have been in the industry a long time, are retiring. Technology is rapidly changing. Employers are looking to hire people who are trained in the new technologies.

MTTI’s HVAC/R Technician program covered the basics for gas, oil, heating, air conditioning and refrigeration.

We gained a good foundation in each area, and are prepared for factory training we’ll need on the job, to install and service specific brands of equipment. There are different directions you can go—strictly refrigeration or strictly Air Conditioning or Heating. Your work can be in people’s homes or in commercial facilities.

The resume and interview help at MTTI is also important—it’s the whole package of training plus employment assistance that helps you get into a career.

The school does well in a short amount of time. Completing the program definitely gives you the edge over someone who applies needing training-on the job. Some of the people in my class were doing a complete 180 in their careers and they got internships and jobs. That says a lot about the school.

Going back to school after 25 years was a real change of life.

I wanted to get the most out of the program that I could, so I put my “all into it”.  At the program’s completion, I was received the Gold Wrench Award, plus Awards for Perfect Attendance and Highest Average. Most important, I now have a career with a great future. I wish I had gone back to school years ago!
