As early as my grammar school days, my fitness journey was catalyzed by the name of a clothing line I wore—‘Chubettes’, specially designed for girls who were a little ‘plump’.  I struggled with self-confidence issues. Eventually, I resorted to laxatives to control my weight.  Needless to say, I had to find a better way to maintain a healthy weight!

As an adult, I made my living for many years in Property Management. When the region had an economic downturn, it became a tough market. I started to think about a career in something I was passionate about. I wanted my love for fitness to inspire others to make their own positive health changes.

Looking online for programs to become a fitness trainer, I knew I wanted more than a weekend course.

I needed more complete information than a weekend course or online program could provide. I looked for a program that would teach me Anatomy and Physiology – and about injuries and medical conditions. I met with an Admissions Representative at MTTI and enrolled in the program. My instructors, Jen and Chris, were wonderful—they made me want to come to school every day. 

Although classroom and hands-on practice in the gym had a laid-back atmosphere, the course material was intense.

We studied anatomy, exercise physiology and kinesiology, program design, client fitness assessment, weight management, wellness coaching and business building skills.  

I earned a Certificate in Functional Movement Screening (FMS). I also prepared for, and passed, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Personal Trainer Certification Exam.

After graduation, I earned an additional certificate in nutrition. (Current MTTI students can earn the AASDN Nutrition Specialist Certification while they are enrolled in the Personal Fitness Trainer program). 

During internship, and as I began working as a Fitness Trainer, I found my niche. 

I love working with people over 30 and all the way through their 80’s. People of all ages come to Planet Fitness; a lot of them have arthritis and injuries, have had hip or knee replacements, or back surgery. Some come here after physical therapy and cardiac rehab.  I believe that, working at any gym, you need to know  about health conditions and injuries. MTTI’s program taught me how to work with people who have all of these conditions.

My goal is to empower people by taking baby steps to start.

I use every day functional movements, teach people the benefits of weight resistance training and show them how to stretch safely and effectively. I encourage them to eat balanced nutritious meals.  At some point, these baby steps add up and they feel good about themselves! 

The most challenging part of being a Fitness Trainer is keeping people motivated. 

I want to help our customers build self-efficacy and increase their confidence. A big part of working with members is truly getting to know them—their initial mindset—and then taking small steps toward a healthy lifelong journey. Exercising, eating healthy and staying on track is a lifelong commitment. 

I view myself as a Health & Wellness Coach. 

Changing long-term lifestyle habits involves not just the body structure and function, but also psychological wellbeing.  It is gratifying to be helping people—they really appreciate it when you are helping them become stronger and healthier.  I appreciate how challenging it can be for someone to start working toward their fitness goals. I invite people to visit me at Planet Fitness, and tell them, ‘Exercising and making better food choices can be the beginning to a whole new you.’

While in school, I interned at four different Planet Fitness locations. I was hired, and have been working at, the Coventry Planet Fitness for more than three years.  I thank the Franchise Owners, Anne Marie Lukin and Steve Lukin for bringing me on board—and also Jason Emmett, the Regional Manager. They continually inspire me and my teammates at Planet Fitness; they make us feel appreciated.  You have changed my life!
